About this threat

Ask Toolbar is a well-known dubious extension that is considered to be a browser hijacker by some. It does not seem to spread this way anymore, but earlier versions of Ask were bundled together with free software and that led to many users unknowingly installing this toolbar. It is referred to as the bundling method and is used by a lot of questionable programs to make users install them. This toolbar is not malicious, nor will it directly harm your computer.

Ask ToolbarIt will, however, change your browser’s settings and force you to use it as you will not be able to undo the changes. Browser hijackers aim to redirect users to sponsored content and they do that by inserting advertisement websites into search results. You could be redirected to all kinds of websites, including unsafe ones. Keeping a hijacker could lead to a malware infection so if you notice that this toolbar is inserting sponsored content into results, remove Ask Toolbar.

How would you obtain it?

Browser hijackers are added to freeware as extra offers and you need to manually deselect them to prevent their installation since they are set to install alongside. To do this, access Advanced or Custom settings when setting up freeware and make sure to uncheck all the boxes that appear there. Ensure that you deselect all the boxes because otherwise you will be allowing all kinds of unnecessary programs to enter your computer. Avoid using Default settings because nothing good will come of it. You will miss everything and end up having to delete Ask Toolbar or similar later on. Ask Toolbar download is also available from its official website.

Should you uninstall Ask Toolbar?

Hijackers are known to redirect users to sponsored content and in order to easily do that, they change browser’s settings. Your homepage, new tabs and search engine will be changed and you will be unable to change them back until you remove Ask Toolbar home page. These changes will also affect all leading browsers, so it does not matter if you use Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. When hijackers set you a different homepage, there usually is a search engine on it and if you were to use it, you’d encounter sponsored content. If you were to press on those results, you’d be redirected to all kinds of unrelated websites. Some hijackers could also lead users to malicious content this way. Not all hijackers do this. Like we mentioned in the beginning, if you notice that this toolbar is doing this as well, remove Ask Toolbar immediately.

Ask Toolbar removal

If you have anti-spyware that detects this toolbar as a threat, use it to get rid of Ask Toolbar. Automatic Ask Toolbar removal may be the quickest if you can’t uninstall Ask Toolbar manually. You can try to erase it manually but you will have to find it yourself.
