About Clop Virus

Clop Virus is a ransomware from the CryptoMix malware family, discovered by malware researcher Michael Gillespie. It a dangerous piece of malware that encrypts your files and demands that you pay a ransom to get them back. Ransomware locks important files with strong encryption algorithms, which makes it impossible to access the files without a decryption tool. Of course, ransomware developers will try to sell it you. Clop Virus

If this ransomware has locked your files, you probably already read the ransom note that claims you need to email the people behind this malware in order to know the amount you need to pay. However, like any other cybersecurity specialist, we encourage you to not contact the crooks and not pay the ransom. While paying might seem like the obvious choice if you want to get your files back, it’s actually not. In fact, there are no guarantees that crooks will send you a decryption tool once they get your money. Furthermore, by paying, you’re essentially encouraging the crooks to continue their criminal activities. Instead, we suggest you delete Clop Virus from your computer and research your file recovery options.

There are a couple of ways you could have picked up the infection, such as via spam emails, by downloading from unsecure sources, clicking on weird ads, etc. Essentially, if you do not have good browsing habits, you are at much higher risk of infecting your computer with ransomware or some other malware.

How does ransomware infect a computer?

Like we said before, users with bad browsing habits are more likely to pick up an infection of some kind. One of the most common ways users infect their computers with ransomware is by opening spam email attachments. Cyber crooks attack an infected file to an email and send it to thousands of users in hopes that they will open the attachments. Those emails are often disguised to look at least somewhat legitimate, with crooks pretending to be legitimate companies/organizations. By claiming that the attached file is highly important and needs to be opened right away, crooks pressure users into opening the file, which results in an infection. One golden rule to follow is, do not open an attached file without making sure it’s safe to do so, even if the email lands in your inbox instead of spam. Look out for grammar mistakes, non-personal greetings (Dear User, Member, Customer, etc., instead of your name), and pressure to open the attachment. Always check the email address to make sure it actually belongs to a legitimate person, and scan the attachments with malware scanners before opening them. VirusTotal can help you with that.

You should also be very careful with your download sources. If you’re an avid torrent user, be very cautious as torrents are often used to spread malware. Furthermore, when visiting questionable websites, make sure you do not engage with advertisements as they are likely to be dangerous. Lastly, when an update becomes available for your software or your system, install it immediately.

What does the ransomware do?

As soon as the ransomware installs, it will scan your computer for certain files and encrypt them. It targets photos, videos, documents, etc., essentially anything that could be of importance. All encrypted files will have a .Clop extension added to them. A ransom note ClopReadMe.txt will also be placed on your computer. The ransom note will explain that your files have been locked and that trying to recover them via third-party software could damage them. If you want to get your files back, you are instructed to email servicedigilogos@protonmail.com or managersmaers@tutanota.com with 2-3 encrypted files attached. Presumably, you would then receive an answer with instructions and the sum you need to pay to get a decryptor.

We’ve already said this, but it bears repeating that you should not pay the ransom or even contact them. There really are no guarantees that paying will result in file decryption, as there is nothing stopping crooks from simply taking your money. If you had backed up your files prior to infection, you can safely recover them after you remove Clop Virus from your device. If you are not regularly backing up your files, we suggest you start because that is the best way to fight ransomware.

It should be mentioned that free ransomware decryption tools are released all the time by malware researchers. For example, NoMoreRansom is a great source for decryptors. If a decryptor for this ransomware is yet to be released, it may happen in the future. We suggest you back up the encrypted files and wait for a free decryptor.

Clop Virus removal

We strongly suggest you use anti-malware software to uninstall Clop Virus from your computer. If you attempt manual Clop Virus removal, you may end up damaging your system more. Thus, install anti-malware software and have it take care of everything. Here is a list of security programs that will detect this ransomware. Unfortunately, removing the ransomware does not mean your files will be unlocked, as that is only possible with a specific decryptor.
