What is FastSupport.com

FastSupport.com is a completely legitimate website that offers the service of remotely connecting to a computer. The websites goes together with the GoToAssist tool set that IT and customer support technicians use to connect to their customers’ computers in order to solve an issue more quickly. Unfortunately, the website is often used by technical support scammers to remotely connect to victims’ computers. FastSupport

Tech-support scams often come as pop-up advertisements warning about a supposed malware infection. The pop-up would advise the user to call the provided number for ‘certified’ technical support. Users can also run into fake tech-support by using a search engine to look up a customer support phone number. Scammers use various tactics to get their phone numbers high in the search results, and since users tend to trust search engines to provide legitimate results high up, they often do not question whether the result is actually valid.

If you do call the fake tech-support, you would be dealing with professional scammers who will do their best to convince you to give remote access to your device. Over the phone, you would be asked to go to FastSupport.com (or some other platform that offers the same service), where you would put in your name and support key number (provided by the “technician”). You would then be prompted to download the GoToAssist.exe tool. The program would then allow the scammer to remotely access your computer and essentially take control of it. Legitimate tech-support service also does this and the process goes much the same way. Once scammers have accessed your device, they would install some kind of questionable software, which are usually expensive but completely useless programs. For this provided “tech-support”, scammers demand that victims pay, usually a couple of hundred dollars. Since there is nothing actually wrong with the computer, victims would be paying for nothing.

Should you allow someone to remotely connect to your computer via FastSupport.com?

The answer to this question is, it depends. Legitimate tech-support may request remote access if they believe that solving an issue on your computer would be quicker. Since they are valid, you do not need to worry about them installing malware on your device or doing something questionable. However, do keep in mind that real tech-support will never call you and request remote access. They do not call customers themselves as they are not aware of the issues they may be having. So if you get a phone call saying Microsoft or Apple tech-support has detected an issue with your device and now need to access your computer to fix it, hang up immediately as it is a scam. Even the FastSupport.com website itself says that you should be cautious and only join support sessions with people you recognize and trust.

When you do have an issues that requires help from tech-support, make sure that the number actually belongs to the company you intend to call. And do not blindly trust search engines to provide you with the correct information. Search results can be manipulated to display incorrect information. For example, if you need to contact Microsoft, go to its official websites to find the correct phone number.

Do you need to remove FastSupport.com’s GoToAssist?

When the GoToAssist tool is installed on your computer, a GoToAssist.exe process will appear in your Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete -> Task Manager). Since the program is used by both scammers and legitimate tech-support, the process will appear both when you are being scammed and given actual technical support.

If you realize mid-session that you are being scammed, you can just abort the session. When you abort it, people on the other side lose all access to your device so you do not need to worry about scammers being able to do something to your computer.

And just to clarify again, FastSupport.com is not a scam website. It is a legitimate platform that is used by valid tech-support to solve issues on customers’ computers. And when you encounter the term FastSupport.com scam, it’s referring to tech-support scams that use the website.
