Remove JS:MINER-C

About this issue

JS:MINER-C is a mining script that anti-virus programs Avast and AVG will warn you about when you encounter it. Different anti-virus programs use different names for this script, and you can check them here. It’s not an infection exactly as there are no malicious files downloaded onto your computer.

Rather, it’s a JavaScript code that launches a cryptocurrency miner when you visit a site that has the code. So if you get a warning about it, you likely are/were visiting some site that uses your computer’s resources to mine for cryptocurrency. There is no need to worry too much, the mining does not harm your computer. However, your anti-malware will warn you that mining is going on because many sites do it without permission. You can usually encounter them on dubious websites, which do not care much for reputation.

There are mining Trojans that actually get inside your computer, but if your anti-malware is warning you about this particular infection, there is no need to delete JS:MINER-C as it’s not actually on your computer.

What does it do?

When you visit a website that runs the mining code, your computer’s resources will be used to mine for cryptocurrency. If you are not familiar with the process, Avast did a comprehensive article about, and you can access it here. If you are familiar with how computers behave when mining is going on, you should be able to notice it, even if you don’t have anti-malware to warn you about it. If you are using a laptop, it will heat up and your fans will work quite loudly. Your computer might slow down, and if you check Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac), you will see your browser using a lot of your CPU. Usually, processes stay between 0.1% and 15-20% if something like a malware scan is going on, thus a process using 50-200% of your CPU will be very noticeable. It usually means mining is going on.

The mining is not going to harm your computer permanently, so if you notice mining, no need to worry too much. It will impact your computer’s performance, however. It may slow down, your browser will act sluggish and load sites slower. It can become quite annoying after a while.

Many frown upon in-browser cryptocurrency mining because site owners do not inform users that this is going on. It’s an alternative to advertisements, which do not bring as much revenue as before due to adblocks, so some choose to insert the mining script onto their sites. However, most adblocks can also block the script.

JS:MINER-C removal

There is no need to remove JS:MINER-C because it’s not actually on your computer. If you do not want the site to mine using your computer, then exit the website. And if your anti-virus is warning you about these scripts, it’s just letting you know what’s going on.
