What is MacReviver

MacReviver is a questionable system optimization tool for Mac computers. It’s classified as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) by many anti-virus programs because of its questionable behaviour. While advertised as an advanced solution to common Mac problems, MacReviver is actually not that good. It claims to clean the computer of junk and duplicate files, uninstall programs properly, essentially optimize the device. However, the things it claims to be able to do can be done manually without issue.

MacReviver

The program can be used for free with limited features, or it can be bought for €60/year. Paying that amount of money for a program that barely does anything is not a great idea. The paid features include cache cleanup, disk usage monitoring, an uninstaller, startup items and default applications manager. You can do all of these things yourself easily.

The program does not have the best reputation online so instead of buying it, we recommend you remove MacReviver.

Why should you delete MacReviver

In many cases, programs classified as PUPs are distributed via software bundling. This method is essentially attaching PUPs (as well as browser hijackers and adware) to free programs as extra offers. Users usually do not notice the offers and end up allowing them to install. However, it does not seem like MacReviver spreads this way. You most likely stumbled upon MacReviver when looking for system optimizers for Macs. If that is the case, we strongly recommend you research programs before installing them in the future. Had you used Google to search MacReviver, you would have gotten results recommending its removal.

MacReviver is not actually a malicious program, hence why it’s not classified as malware, so it should not damage your device. However, it’s not actually all that useful so keeping it installed is also not beneficial. The program has free features like duplicates finder, battery optimization, files finder, restore point, shredder and free space cleaner. But most of its features are locked unless you buy a subscription for €60/year. In our opinion, the features are not worth the money.

The program has a feature to “clean up unneeded system files to free up drive space”, which is rather worrying because incorrect system file deletion can have serious negative consequences. There is also a junk file cleaner which offers to “securely empty your trash” as if emptying it manually is more complicated than pressing “Empty Trash”. The anti-theft feature is essentially “Find My”, the legitimate Apple app that allows you to see the location of your devices. You can use the app to track your lost device, delete all data on it, play a sound, etc. The app can be used for free by anyone with an account so there is no need to use other programs.

Whether your Mac even needs an optimization tool is debatable. Most of the optimization that programs do can be done manually pretty easily, so before installing such programs, you need consider whether you actually need them.

MacReviver removal

You should be able to uninstall MacReviver manually. You can use the program’s uninstaller, or you can do it by dragging all related files as well as the program itself to the trash. You can find the program itself in Finder -> Applications. After you have dragged all related files to the trash, do not forget to empty it.
