About this threat

MyScrapNook is a questionable browser extension that is also classified as a browser hijacker. It’s developed by Mindspark Interactive Network Inc, a company responsible for countless of unwanted programs. This extension supposedly allows users to create collages and cards with photos but it also hijacks browsers and forces users to use a questionable search engine.

MyScrapNook

This is especially irritating when users do not even choose to install the extension and it just appears out of the blue. If this has happened to you, you need to be more attentive when it comes to installing freeware because a hijacker could be attached to it. It’s not malicious, nor will it harm your computer but we do not recommend using it. The provided search engine may insert sponsored content into results so that you would be redirected to certain sites to generate traffic for them. We recommend you delete MyScrapNook.

How does it spread?

You can get the extension from the official website or browser shop but it may also get into your computer via software bundles. If the latter is the case, it was attached to freeware as an extra offer and it was hidden. To be able to see and deselect these offers, choose Advanced or Custom settings. They will allow you to see everything that has been added. If there is nothing, you can safely proceed to install the freeware but if you notice that there indeed is something, make sure you deselect everything. Whichever way you installed it, we recommend you uninstall MyScrapNook because it is rather dubious.

Why remove MyScrapNook?

The extension will change your browser’s settings and set a new homepage, which is completely unnecessary for this kind of extension. The changes will affect all leading browsers, including Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox and once they are carried out, you will be unable to undo them unless you first delete MyScrapNook. Your new homepage will be promoting a search engine, which we do not recommend using. Some of these kinds of dubious search engines can insert sponsored content into results so that you would be redirected. In rare cases, hijackers can lead users to malicious sites where malware could be lurking. If you are not careful, you could end up with some kind of malware by accident. And there’s probably much more reliable extensions offering the same thing, so you might want to look into that. Delete MyScrapNook. You should especially not keep this add-on if it entered your computer without permission. Never allow programs of any kind to stay installed if you do not recall installing them or they did not come with the computer.
