Ook.gg is a questionable website, and if you find it set as your default search engine, your computer is infected with a browser hijacker. It’s not a particularly dangerous infection, more annoying than anything because it will make unwanted changes to the browser’s settings.

It should first be mentioned that browser hijackers are not serious infections. So the Ook.gg Redirect will not cause harm to your computer directly. However, what hijackers do cause is annoyance.

When a browser hijacker installs, the first thing it does is change browser settings. That includes setting a different homepage/new tabs and changing the default search engine. In this case, the default search engine is set to Ook.gg. The point of doing all that is to make it easier to redirect users to sponsored websites. Redirecting users is the main goal of a browser hijacker.

When you do a search, whether through your address bar or via Ook.gg, you will be shown sponsored results. Those results will be inserted among legitimate ones. If you click on those results, you will be taken to all kinds of questionable sites. It’s worth mentioning that those sites will not necessarily be safe. You could be redirected to sites hosting malware or promoting various scams. Thus, we recommend you avoid interacting with results that have been altered by infections like browser hijackers and adware.

You should also know that while the hijacker is installed on your device, you will not be able to make changes to your browser’s settings. These changes can also affect all popular browsers, including Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

Lastly, we should mention that browser hijackers track users to some extent. They track what sites users visit, what they search for, the content they interact with, their IP address, etc. While it’s not particularly personal information, there’s no reason to put up with any kind of data collection from a program like browser hijacker. Especially because the collected information could also be shared with third parties.

The one good thing about browser hijackers is that they are very obvious, which means users will be able to remove them more quickly. As soon as you notice unauthorized changes to your browser, you should check your computer for an infection. You can use anti-virus software to remove Ook.gg Redirect from your computer but you can also do it manually as it’s not an overly complicated process.

How did a browser hijacker install on your computer?

In most cases, users install infections like browser hijackers via the software bundling method. Software bundling is a very convenient method of distribution for developers of unwanted programs because it basically allows their items to be installed without requiring explicit permission.

The way software bundling works is programs like adware and browser hijackers can be added to freeware as extra offers. These offers, while technically optional, are preselected to install alongside without explicit permission. They’re also hidden in settings users don’t usually use. This is why software bundling is a rather controversial installation method, and why programs that use it are often detected as potential threats by anti-virus programs.

The offers that come added to free programs are optional but they need to be manually deselected to stop their installation. Fortunately, that is easy to do. When installing a program, use Advanced (Custom) settings instead of Default. The installation window will always recommend using Default settings but if you do that, you will authorize all added offers to be installed alongside. This would fill your computer with junk very quickly. However, if you opt for Advanced settings, you will be able to review what has been added and deselect what you do not want.

As mentioned already, software bundling is a rather controversial installation method, so we don’t recommend installing any programs that use it.
