What is SharePal
SharePal appears to belong to the adware category. Adware is a relatively minor infection because it doesn’t directly harm the computer. However, it’s not harmless either because it constantly exposes you to advertisements, not all of which will be safe. The ads make adware a very noticeable infection, which allows users to react quickly and get rid of it. In addition to showing typical adware symptoms, this infection can also be noticed in the Task Manager. If you were to open it on an infected computer, there would be a SharePal.exe process running. While it shouldn’t be using much of your computer resources, it’s still rather noticeable. If you do indeed find it running on your computer, you should delete SharePal as soon as possible.
These kinds of infections are usually picked up by accident when installing free programs. Adware, among other infections like browser hijackers and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), is often attached to freeware as an extra offer. Those kinds of offers are able to install alongside the freeware without requiring your permission. It’s not difficult to avoid these unwanted installations, you just need to know how. We will explain that in the following section of this report.
SharePal spreads via free software bundles
Unwanted programs use software bundling in order to boost their downloads. They are attached to popular free programs as extra offers, which are permitted to install alongside, unless they are manually prevented from doing so. If you want to stop these unwanted installations, you need to pay attention to how you install programs, particularity ones you get from questionable sources. Most importantly, you need to opt for Advanced (Custom) settings if given the option. Those settings will make all offers visible, as they would be hidden otherwise. If you are shown that something has indeed been added, all you have to do is deselect the boxes. After you have done that, you can continue installing the program.
What does SharePal do?
The first signs that SharePal is installed on your computer is usually all the ads popping out of nowhere. This can affect all browsers you have installed, whether you are using Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. If you have adblocker installed, that may be a temporary solution but it will not solve the problem. Ads can be a symptom of all kinds of malware, but you can see whether you are dealing with this adware in particular by opening your Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del -> Task Manager). You should be able to see the SharePal.exe process somewhere.
Until you get rid of the infection, you should avoid interacting with ads because they could be unsafe. Be particularly careful about ads that suggest you to download something, or ones that offer you prizes. Programs or updates offered via ads often turn out to be malware, and giveaways are usually scams.
Keep in mind that you should never download anything from an ad. Even if a program seems useful, research it and download it from an official source, never advertisements. And if you are requested to install an update by an advert, know that it’s definitely hiding malware. Legitimate updates are never pushed this way.
We should also mention that adware spies on users and collects certain information about them, such as IP address, websites visited, search queries, etc. That data would the be used to customize ads so that users are more likely to engage with them.
