About Vbs:malware-gen
Vbs:malware-gen seems to be a false positive detection appearing on Avast, Norton and AVG anti-virus programs. Back in 2017, a lot of their users started getting warnings about Vbs:malware-gen when visiting legitimate websites, such as Amazon or Google. Using other anti-virus programs to run computer scans would not give any indications about anything malicious, so many people were left confused as to what is going on.
These warnings would encourage users to run scans of their systems, which resulted in a lot of legitimate files being deleted. Scan results would show hundreds of legitimate and safe files as malicious, and the anti-virus programs would delete them. This caused a lot of damage to many users because in addition to personal files being deleted, the anti-virus also erased essential system files. As a result, some users ended up having to reinstall their systems.
Users getting these notification were advised to not run suggested scans so that Avast would not delete files. However, the malware alerts did encourage users to scan, and those who trusted the anti-virus program ended up with hundreds or even thousands of delete files. For many people, the issue seems to have been fixed with an update, which Avast released soon after reports started coming in.
“The VPS 20170221-1 contained an invalid script detection that resulted in a significant false positive across the Avast userbase”, Head of Avast Threat Labs explained in a post. “The Threat Labs team deployed a change in detection verification logic which moved the verification to an earlier stage of the detection release process. Multiple factors including deployment of new backend version caused this detection to bypass safety checks that are normally in place resulting in its release.”
