Trojan:win32/coinminer, more commonly known as CoinMiner, is a Trojan that will launch a Bitcoin miner on your computer. These kinds of infections essentially use your computer resources to mine for cryptocurrency, commonly either Bitcoin or Monero. This particular one focuses on mining the former. It’s not the most dangerous computer infection you can encounter, and it will not harm your computer in a severe way.
It’s merely using your computer’s resources to make money. However, you need to remove trojan:win32/coinminer as soon as possible because the people behind this miner are using you to mine Bitcoin, without your permission. That is considered to be malicious activity, thus the sooner you get rid of the Trojan, the better. While there are no overly obvious signs that the infection is present on your system, if you are attentive enough, you will be able to notice that something is going. There are numerous ways you could have obtained this infection, such as by downloading software cracks or other illegal downloads. You should avoid dubious downloads sources, such as Torrents, for this reason.
Is it harmful to my computer?
When the Trojan infects your computer, it will launch a Bitcoin miner which will use your computer’s resources to mine for cryptocurrency. That is not harmful to your computer but the fact is, someone is using your device to make money, and you should not put up with that. One of the most obvious signs that a miner is present is a noticeable slowdown in your system. Suddenly, your computer will act sluggish, programs will take a long time to load and crash all the time. That could be a sign of other malware infections, but if you check Task Manager, you can be sure of what you are dealing with. Look for weird processes using up a lot of your CPU, such asamd_gpu.exe, cg.exe, minerd.exe and svchost.exe. If you notice them, or any other kind of processes using 50% or more of your CPU, you are likely dealing with a miner.
It should be noted that your CPU is not meant to run at such high temperatures for long periods of time, so if the miner is left unnoticed for a while, your CPU’s lifespan might be shortened. But otherwise, your computer should not be harmed.
“trojan:win32/coinminer” is how Windows Defender identifies the Trojan. If you have other anti-malware software installed, it may be discovered with a different name. And any capable malware removal program should be able to identify it, especially seeing as it’s been around for a while.
How did you acquire the miner?
If you have recently downloaded from a questionable source, that is where you likely obtained it from. It can come together with software cracks or key generators, so be careful about what you download and from where you do it. Avoid Torrents, or any other website offering paid software for free, because an illegal copy of a program may not be the only thing you could be getting.

You will need anti-malware software to delete trojan:win32/coinminer. You probably already have one running, if you were able to identify this miner. Scan your computer, and once it’s detected, uninstall trojan:win32/coinminer. The mining should stop. If you still notice signs that it could be active on your computer, something may have gone wrong, and the Trojan is still present. Try again with a different program.
