About this threat

Herokuapp is a cloud platform as a service (PaaS) aiming to help users build, run and operate apps on the cloud. It’s a completely legitimate service that allows even the most novice users build applications. However, it’s not regulated who can create apps, thus even people with malicious intentions could create them. Those created apps are hosted on herokuapp.com, and when users click on the link and get some kind of infection, they blame the website, thus some might refer to this platform as as herokuapp virus. That kind of classification is not correct, and this is a legitimate and safe service.

Herokuapp

This platform is not likely to host malicious apps, usually just unwanted ones, such as hijackers, adware or other kinds of potentially unwanted programs (PUPs). Links to those apps hosted on the site can be seen shared on Facebook by infected accounts. Users get a message with the link to the app hosted on herokuapp, click on it and end up downloading the unwanted program. You can encounter this as the Facebook virus.

Is Herokuapp dangerous?

The platform itself is certainly not malicious, and most of the apps hosted on it are also safe to use. However, it also hosts potentially dangerous apps that can often be encountered spreading on Facebook. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to avoid these threats. You just have to not click on random links sent to you by your contacts. The messages containing those unwanted programs are usually pretty obvious. They will have a link to the app, and a generic message like ‘Check this out’. They don’t look even remotely convincing to the experienced eye, but users who have never encountered it before, might end up clicking on it, thus downloading the unwanted program. They would also start sending similar messages to contacts’ accounts.

Herokuapp is safe to use, it’s merely a tool to create and host apps, you just need to be careful about the links that lead to it. You won’t pick up a serious malware infection, but the threats that you can end up with will be highly annoying to deal with. They could hijacker your browser or bombard your screen with advertisements.

Herokuapp removal

If you have pressed on some suspicious link recently, you could have downloaded something unwanted onto your computer. In order to know for certain, scan your computer with anti-spyware software. If something is inside your computer, it would be identified and gotten rid of. You can also attempt manual elimination, although you have to know where the infections is hiding specifically.
