What is ZipConvertAce

ZipConvertAce is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that is advertised as an archive manager that will help users compress or extract files. It’s not a malicious program, though it also not something you should keep installed on your computer. One of the reasons why it’s classified as a PUP is because it installs via software bundling, a method that allows programs to install essentially without requiring permission from users. This method will be explained in more detail further on, but the gist of it is that PUPs come attached to free software as extra offers, and those offers are permitted to install alongside automatically, unless users prevent them from doing so manually.

Like we said, ZipConvertAce is not malicious, and it shouldn’t harm your computer. However, the program appears to have browser hijacker characteristics, which would allow it to change browser’s settings and set a different homepage/search engine. While the program may work as advertised, keeping it installed is not recommended, particularly if it installed without permission. Software bundling is essentially adding additional offers to programs. Those offers are often adware, browser hijackers, and potentially unwanted programs. The reason this method of installation is quite frowned upon is because the added offers, while optional, are set to install alongside the program automatically. Furthermore, they’re not plainly visible unless users opt for certain settings. This prevents users from deselecting the offers, as in many cases, they’re not even aware of anything being added to the program they are installing.

In order to prevent these unwanted offers from installing in the future, always opt for Advanced (Custom) settings during freeware installation. Those settings will make the added offers visible, and you will have the option of deselecting all of them. Simply unchecking the boxes of those offers is enough. Once that is done, you can continue installing the program.

The majority of programs you download from those free download websites will have these offers attached, thus you should never let your guard down. Otherwise, your computer will be filled with junk programs that do nothing but cause you irritation.

The program also has an official website where you can download it from, though it’s unlikely that you would come across this archive manger in particular when looking for one, seeing as there are so many available.

Is ZipConvertAce harmful?

ZipConvertAce is not malware, hence the classification PUP. It will not harm the computer because that is not its main intention. However, what it might do is change your browser’s settings without permission and force you to use a highly questionable search engine. If it does change your browser’s settings, you will be unable to undo the changes while the hijacker is installed. Until you delete ZipConvertAce, you may be stuck with the changes in your browser, whether it’s Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
