What kind of malware are you dealing with

8chan Virus refers to file-encrypting malware that will leave your files locked. Such malware is known as ransomware, and is one of the most dangerous malware infections you could get. It will encrypt your files and then demand that you pay a fine to get them back. It’s essentially taking files for hostage. 8chan Virus

Unfortunately, in a lot of cases, such infections lead to permanent file loss. Victims do have the option of paying the ransom for file decryption but that is never the recommended option. We will discuss the reasons for this later in the report, but in the meantime, you should try to remember if you’ve backed up your files recently. If you have, you can just delete 8chan Virus and recover files from there. If backup is not an option, you can try other file recover options, or wait for a malware researcher to release a free decryption tool.

You must have recently opened some kind of spam email attachment, and that led to the infection gaining entrance to your computer. If it got in via email, you need to be more careful about opening emails. There are others ways ransomware spreads, and we will discuss them in the following section.

How does ransomware spread?

Ransomware is generally spread via spam email, attached to legitimate looking emails. Emails holding malware usually end up in the spam folder, but users still tend to open them. The email may have legitimate looking text, pretend to be from a real company and strongly pressure you to open the attachment. Careless users will not even question it and open the attached file, ending up with ransomware. This is why you need to be careful about opening email attachments. No matter how legitimate it looks, if you were not expecting it, review it before opening. Check the sender, if they are claiming to be from some company, check that the email address matches the company’s. Look for many grammatical mistakes, and see if your name is mentioned. If it’s a sender with whom you’ve dealt with before, he/she will use your name in the greeting. For example, if Amazon was to email you, it would include the name you have given it when you registered. Generic greetings like User, Customer or Member would not be used. We also recommend scanning the attachment with a malware scanner, such as VirusTotal.

It may also spread via dubious downloads, such as Torrents, ads and questionable websites. If you need to download a program/update, only use official sources, never pop-ups or any other kinds of ads.

What happened to your files?

As soon as the ransomware was launched, it started encrypting your files. Depending on which variant you have, there will be a file extension added to all effected files. It will have a random combinations of numbers and letters, and then an email address. You will then find a ransom note in all folders containing encrypted files. It will be named “HOW TO RECOVER ENCRYPTED FILES” [email address]. The note will not explain much, it will just say that your files were encrypted, display your personal identifier, and ask that you contact the crooks via email. The amount you would need to pay for decryption is not known, as that would be arranged via email. Like we said, we don’t recommend paying the ransom because it’s unlikely you will get your files back. You are dealing with cyber crooks, who are unlikely to feel any obligation to help you. They could just easily take your money and not give you anything. In addition, by paying you would be supporting an industry that does hundreds of millions of dollars in damages every year.

Using part of that money to buy backup would be a wiser decision because you could just recover files from there is this situation ever happened again. If you do have backup, just remove 8chan Virus from your computer and then recover files.

8chan Virus removal

Manual elimination is not recommended because you could end up further damaging your computer. Instead, obtain anti-malware software and have it take care of the ransomware for you. Unfortunately, anti-malware software will not help you with file decryption, it will only uninstall 8chan Virus from your computer.
