What is PriceMeter

PriceMeter is an old adware program that will fill your screen with advertisements. It’s not a malicious program exactly, as it will not harm your device directly. Its main goal is to make revenue by exposing you to advertisements. However, those adverts are why adware is not only annoying, but also somewhat dangerous. Adware does not show you only safe ads, it could easily expose you to scams and malware as well. PriceMeter

This is why you should not engage with any ads while adware is still present on your computer. You will be presented with amazing offers, warned about malware on your device, promised all kinds of prize, and you need to ignore all of those ads. Adware generated ads are often scams, or they’re trying to distribute malware. So until you delete PriceMeter, stay away from ads. Continue reading to find out what kind of ads you can encounter and why they could be dangerous.

PriceMeter may be advertised as a program that will help shop online by comparing prices of different retailers. However, countless adware programs pretend to be useful programs when in reality they’re simply trying to expose you to as many ads as possible. So when picking programs to help when shopping online, research them properly before installing them. However, we highly doubt you installed PriceMeter knowingly. The more likely scenario is you installing freeware that had PriceMeter attached to it. Attaching programs to other programs is referred to as software bundling. It’s a common installation method that unwanted program developers use to make users install their programs. You can find out how to avoid installing software bundles in the following section of this report.

PriceMeter installation

Users who end up with PriceMeter usually install it accidentally via software bundles. What happens is the adware is attached to popular free programs, and when users install those free programs, they do not see the adware attached and it ends up installed alongside. This happens because the added offers are usually hidden, and users do not know to pick Advanced settings to make them visible. When given the options, users need to always opt for Advanced (Custom) settings because otherwise, the added offers will remain hidden. By choosing Advanced, users will also be able to deselect all offers. It’s suggested to uncheck all the offers, even if they seem useful. They can be difficult to get rid of, and users will want to do that, once they are already installed, so it’s best to block them from the very beginning.

Should you remove PriceMeter?

It’s highly doubtful you think of PriceMeter as useful. It’s likely bombarding your screen with all kinds of ads, no matter which browser you are using (whether it’s Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox). When browsing the internet, you are likely seeing tempting deals presented by ads, are warned about malware on your computer, and are promised various prizes. These are the typical ads that adware generates for users, and they could be dangerous so do not engage with them.

One of the more common adware generated ads will claim that you have won something. This is a classic scam that aims to get users’ personal information. Users are tempted with great prizes (Amazon gift cards, iPhones, Samsung smartphones, etc.), and are asked to provide their personal information for the prize to be supposedly delivered. Users who provide their personal information would start getting scam phone calls and spam emails. It’s important to remember that these kinds of giveaways will never be legitimate, particularly by Amazon, Google or Facebook. You can just disregard them altogether.

You might also get redirected to weird sites where a pop-up would warn you about malware on your computer. It tries to scare users into calling the provided number where fake technicians would try to get remote access to your computer so that they can steal files and install questionable software. These are usually tech-support scams aiming to get your money, as you would need to pay by the end of the “support” session. These scams are quite common, but that’s all they are, scams. Your browser will never display legitimate malware alerts because that’s not its function. And legitimate companies like Microsoft and Apple will not make unsolicited contact, you have to initiate the contact yourself.

Finally, seeing as this adware is some kind of online shopping helper, you will most certainly encounter amazing deals. However, no matter how tempting they may seem, trusting them is not recommended. Those amazing deals would turn out to be scams more often than not. One rule to remember when you encounter great deals, if they seem to be too good to be true, they probably are.

Adware also collects information about you so that it can tailor ads for you. It will track what you search for, what sites you visit, what you click on, etc. And that information can then be shared with unfamiliar third-parties.
