What is ctfmon.exe?

ctfmon.exe is a Microsoft process responsible for controlling Alternative User Input and the Office Language bar. According to Microsoft, ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard, translation, and other alternative user input technologies. Obviously, it is a legitimate Windows process so if you find it running in your Task manager, it’s nothing to worry about. ctfmon

However, if you were to google the process, you’d get loads of results of people asking whether they can disable the process for one reason or another. The process doesn’t really have enough impact on the system to be noticed but some users want to disable it because they have no use for it. We don’t recommend disabling it because it could cause problems with your Office programs.

However, it bears mentioning that while this process is legitimate and harmless, it not out of the realms of possibility that it could be malware in disguise. It’s not uncommon for malware to be concealed as legitimate processes in order to avoid detection and removal.

Should you remove ctfmon.exe?

If you’re set on disabling the legitimate ctfmon.exe process, you can do so by going to Control panel -> Admin tools -> Services -> Touch Keyboard and Handwriting panel service. Disable the service.

If you have any suspicions that the ctfmon.exe process running on your computer isn’t actually legitimate and could be malware, you need to scan your computer with anti-malware software immediately. If you don’t have any kind of protection on your computer, install a trustworthy anti-malware tool that has real-time security, and perform a scan. If any kind of malware is detected, remove it. Even after your computer is clean, you should keep anti-malware software running at all times.
