Virus refers to a questionable search engine that gets pushed onto users by browser hijackers and similar infections. If you notice that your browser is redirecting you to whenever you open your browser, your computer is likely infected with a browser hijacker. browser hijacker is technically not a virus but it’s often referred to as such because it does have very frustrating characteristics. The good news is that it’s not particularly dangerous nor will it directly damage your computer. Instead, it will change your browser’s settings and try to redirect you to questionable sites.

Browser hijackers are very noticeable infections because they make very obvious changes to users’ browser settings. Specifically, hijackers change the homepage, new tabs, and default search engines without explicit permission. These changes can affect all popular browsers, including Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. These setting changes are also irreversible while the hijacker is still installed. is a site that some browser hijackers will set as your homepage and new tabs. The site itself is empty, it only has a search box. Unless you had a specific site set as your homepage, you may not even notice the change because is very generic. The point of this change is to force you to use the search box. When you do a search, you will be redirected to a questionable site first and then to Google. The redirect to the questionable site will happen so quickly that you may not even notice. The hijacker is essentially aiming to direct traffic to specific websites.

While browser hijackers do not directly harm the computer, they’re not entirely harmless. These types of infections redirect to highly questionable sites, some of which could be promoting scams or hiding malware. Browser hijackers are also known to collect information about users’ browsing habits. Specifically, the hijacker will track what sites you visit, what you search for, and your IP address. This information can also be shared with third parties.

Considering that the hijacker is completely useless to you, you should remove Virus as soon as possible. Because it’s not a serious infection, you can do it both manually and using anti-virus programs. The latter is recommended because the program would take care of everything.

How did virus install on your computer?

Infections like browser hijackers and adware are usually installed by users themselves, though it’s usually unknowingly. These infections can be attached to free programs as extra offers, in what’s known as the software bundling method. The way the method works is the added offers are permitted to be installed alongside the program automatically and without requiring explicit permission from you. These offers are technically optional but users need to manually deselect them to prevent their installations. The issue with that is that the offers are hidden in settings users don’t normally use.

To correctly install programs and not allow any of the unwanted items to be installed, you need to use Advanced (Custom) settings when installing programs. The installation window always recommends using Default (Basic) settings but if you follow this recommendation, all added offers will install automatically. However, Advanced settings will not only show you what has been added but also give you the option to deselect everything. All you need to do is uncheck the boxes.

We always recommend deselecting all offers. It’s a controversial installation method and most of the legitimate programs do not use it. In fact, it’s pretty common for programs that use software bundling to be detected as potential threats by anti-virus programs. So if you allow these unwanted installations, you’ll only be filling your computer with junk that can be problematic to get rid of later on.

How to remove Virus

Because browser hijackers are not complex infections, you can remove Virus both manually and using anti-virus software. Manual Virus removal may take longer because hijackers can be quite persistent but it is possible. You can find instructions on how to manually remove Virus below.

Using anti-virus software to remove Virus is recommended because the program will do everything for you. Once the hijacker is gone, your browsing will go back to normal and you will be able to change your browser’s settings however you want.
