Is Tasksche.exe related to an infection?

Tasksche.exe is a file associated with the infamous WannaCry ransomware. This ransomware made headlines back in May when it managed to infect more than 200 thousand computers in 150 countries. It did a lot of damage to businesses, healthcare services, as well as individual users. Infection started very suddenly and by the time the spread was slowed down, it had already managed to infect thousand of computers all over the world. TaskscheIt used a known vulnerability in not updated Windows computers to enter, and once it was inside, it encrypted files. It then demanded that the victims pay a ransom to get access to their computers back, and to recover files. Despite the huge scale of the attack, WannaCry only managed to make $72 000, which suggests a lot of victims were either not willing to pay, or had backup. The attack received a lot of media attention and a lot of speculations about the people behind it, but it was not enough to prevent NotPetya ransomware attack a month later.

Should you delete Tasksche.exe?

If you somehow find it on your computer, you need to remove Tasksche.exe immediately. It can be located at C:\\WINDOWS\\tasksche.exe. If you don’t already have it, obtain anti-malware software, and scan your computer. Since Tasksche.exe is related to WannaCry, it’s not a file that should remain on your system, and your security software should flag it as a threat. Having anti-malware software is essential these days, unless you are someone who is very knowledgeable when it comes to computers and can identify symptoms of an infection, as well manage to avoid getting infected in the first place. We should say that having malware removal software is not enough to protect yourself, especially from ransomware. You need to familiarize yourself with how file-encrypting malware spreads so that you can prevent it from entering your computer, as well as have backup in case you do get infected. And in the mean time, make sure you delete Tasksche.exe if you find it on your computer.
