About Cockblocker ransomware

Cockblocker is a new ransomware that does not seem to always encrypt files. Typically, this ransomware spreads via spam email attachments. If you get an email with an infected attachment and open it, you will download the ransomware onto your computer. Cockblocker seems to be still in development and reportedly, it will not necessarily encrypt your files. If it does, you files will become inaccessible and you will be asked to pay to get them back. It’s important to understand that paying ransomware developers is like a gamble. There’s a slight chance they will decrypt your files but in the majority of cases, they just take your money and proceed to ignore you. We suggest you remove Cockblocker ransomware as soon as it shows itself.

How did you get infected?

Ransomware infects computers when users carelessly open email attachments. It extremely important that you do not go about opening attachments left and right because if you open the wrong one, ransomware will download onto your computer. It’s that easy to lose your files. Always double check the sender and the contents to make sure that what you are opening is 100% safe. Those emails usually look very official, with the sender pretending to be a company representative or someone from the government. By doing so they can pressure users into opening the infected attachment. Double check the sender and the contents for any suspicious signs that it could be ransomware. Even though it might take some time, it’s still better than potentially losing your files.

How does Cockblocker ransomware act?

Just like any other ransomware, once it’s on the computer, it will start doing what it was designed to do. Encrypt files. Because it’s still being developed, it might not actually encrypt your files so you might be lucky. When the file encryption process is complete, you will see the .hannah file attachment added to all affected files. A ransom note will then be launched and you will be informed, in a very badly written text, that your files have been encrypted. You will be asked to pay 1 Bitcoin (around $770). Like we mentioned before, paying does not necessarily mean you will get your files back. There’s nothing stopping developers from just taking your money and leaving your files encrypted. They’re cyber criminals, so you should not trust them. Instead, you should invest that money into reliable backup. If this were to happen again, you could restore your files from there and not worry about losing your files. In the mean time, make sure you delete Cockblocker. If you have backed up your files before you got infected by Cockblocker, you can get your files back from there. But first you need to remove Cockblocker.
