What is Koolova?
Koolova is an in-development ransomware that was discovered recently. As far as ransomware goes, this is a strange one. It’s still being developed which means it’s not fully functional but that could change at any time. If it were to become functional, it would most likely spread via spam emails and fake downloads. Most ransomware encrypt your files and then demand that you pay to get them back. The main goal of Koolova seems to be to educate users about the dangers of ransomware. They do not demand that users pay, they just want you to read two articles about ransomware. Once the user has done that, he/she can decrypt the files. You would then need to delete Koolova.
What would the functioning version of Koolova do?
Even though Koolova is not operational at the moment, we want to take this chance and inform you of possible ways to get infected with other ransomware. The most popular method among cyber criminals is spam email attachments. An infected file is attached to an email and when someone opens it, the virus download onto the computer. Just one click and your computer is infected. This is why it’s important that you be cautious and do not open attachments left and right. Always make sure they are safe before you do. You should also be careful with downloads. Do not download suspicious files from pop-ups and refrain from using Torrents. If you insist, at least take all measures to ensure it’s safe.
Koolova would encrypt your files and then launch a ransom note. The developer is introduced as the ‘nice Jigsaw’, Jigsaw’s twin. He will inform you that your files have been encrypted and that this infection is referred to as ransomware. The developer proceeds to ask victims that they stop downloading unsafe applications. Koolova gives you the option of decrypting files if you read two articles related to staying safe. The two articles mentioned are from Google Security Blog and BleepingComputer, respectively. When the victim finishes reading those two articles, the Decrypt My Files button will be available. The decryptor would then be displayed and once the victim puts in the decryption key, files would be restored. Koolova does not demand any money, it just seems to want to educate people about how dangerous infection could be and how to protect computers from them. Although, it does promise to delete your files if you fail to read the articles in time, which it might be able to do. In any case, Koolova is still in-development and there are much more serious ransomware to worry about.
Koolova removal
If this ransomware were to become fully functional, you would need to use anti-malware software to delete Koolova. Manual Koolova removal would be possible but ransomware viruses are quite complex, which makes it difficult to get rid of by hand. In any case, anti-malware software should always be present on your computer, and not just to remove Koolova or similar. It will protect you from serious infections.

Step 1. Delete Koolova using Safe Mode with Networking.
Remove Koolova from Windows 7/Windows Vista/Windows XP
- Click on Start and select Shutdown.
- Choose Restart and click OK.
- Start tapping F8 when your PC starts loading.
- Under Advanced Boot Options, choose Safe Mode with Networking.
- Open your browser and download the anti-malware utility.
- Use the utility to remove Koolova
Remove Koolova from Windows 8/Windows 10
- On the Windows login screen, press the Power button.
- Tap and hold Shift and select Restart.
- Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Start Settings.
- Choose Enable Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking under Startup Settings.
- Click Restart.
- Open your web browser and download the malware remover.
- Use the software to delete Koolova
Step 2. Restore Your Files using System Restore
Delete Koolova from Windows 7/Windows Vista/Windows XP
- Click Start and choose Shutdown.
- Select Restart and OK
- When your PC starts loading, press F8 repeatedly to open Advanced Boot Options
- Choose Command Prompt from the list.
- Type in cd restore and tap Enter.
- Type in rstrui.exe and press Enter.
- Click Next in the new window and select the restore point prior to the infection.
- Click Next again and click Yes to begin the system restore.
Delete Koolova from Windows 8/Windows 10
- Click the Power button on the Windows login screen.
- Press and hold Shift and click Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot and go to Advanced options.
- Select Command Prompt and click Restart.
- In Command Prompt, input cd restore and tap Enter.
- Type in rstrui.exe and tap Enter again.
- Click Next in the new System Restore window.
- Choose the restore point prior to the infection.
- Click Next and then click Yes to restore your system.
