What is Levis Locker?

Levis Locker is a new ransomware that was only discovered a couple of days ago. Typically, it uses malicious email attachments to infect computers. Levis Locker seems to use the very widely known scare tactic in order to pressure users into paying. It will lock your screen and claim that you have been viewing illegal material, therefore, you need to pay a fine. The claims are not true, the only reason Levis Locker has locked your screen is to extort money. Reportedly, it’s unlikely to encrypt files so you don’t need to pay anything. The only thing you should do is remove Levis Locker from your computer. Then you should be able to use it as normal. Now that you are aware of such dangerous viruses, you should invest in reliable backup. If you were to get a ransomware that encrypts files, there would be little chance to restore them without it.

What does Levis Locker do?

You have probably realized that the reason Levis Locker is on your computer is because you most likely opened an infected file attachment. It’s incredibly easy to infect your computer. You get a seemingly normal looking email that encourages you to open the file attached because it’s an important document. The next thing you know, your files are encrypted or your screen is locked. Always double check the contents and the sender before you open the attachments. Even if those emails seem to come from well-known companies or government organizations.

Once Levis Locker is on your computer, it will lock your screen. A note will then be displayed. It will say that your desktop was locked because of illegal activity online. It will display your IP address and claim that you have been viewing illegal material, including child pornography, bestiality, torture and rape. You won’t be able to access your files or do anything with your computer and that only further scares the victim. The note also says that if you pay $500, your computer will be unlocked. If you compare this to the infamous FBI virus, where the victim is given detailed descriptions about which laws he/she has broken, this note does not provide much information. The developers will also claim that if you do not pay in 24 hours, your computer will be ‘destroyed’. There is no need to pay as is it just trying to scare you into paying the money. As soon as you delete Levis Locker, your screen will be unlocked. It should also be noted that while this early version of Levis Locker does not seem to encrypt files, this may change in the future.
