About this infection

LOCKME Ransomware is a file-encrypting type of malware that will lock your files and will not allow you access to them until you pay a ransom. File decryption is not always possible, which is one of the reasons why ransomware is considered to be such a serious infection. You will be offered to buy a decryption tool from the crooks, but that is not recommended for reasons we will explain later on in this report. LOCKME RansomwareIf you backed up your files prior to infection, there shouldn’t be an issue with file recovery. However, if you have no backup, you might be facing permanent file loss. It is possible that malware specialists will release a free decryption tool, as they sometimes do, but that is not guaranteed. You should consider backing up the encrypted files and waiting for a free decryptor.

There are multiple ways you could have picked up the infection, such as via infected email attachments, malicious ads or downloads from unreliable sources. Infecting your computer can be very easy, thus you need to be extra careful. Spread methods will also be explained in further detail, so continue reading.

What happened to your files?

Once you allow the ransomware to enter your computer, it will begin encrypting your files. You will likely have all your important ones locked, and a .lockme file extension added. The ransomware will then drop a ransom note which will explain what has happened to your files. It suggests you buy the decryption tool for 0.03 Bitcoin, which equals to around $230 at the time of writing. After the payment has been made, the victim is asked to contact the crook via the provided email addresses, LockMecQqL3Ruyi7V0RfZ@tutamail.com or LockMe9hG1F7pbWqThUt9P8@mailfence.com. Supposedly, once the payment has been confirmed, the victim would be sent a decryptor. Like we have mentioned above, we do not recommend complying with the demands. For one, you are dealing with cyber criminals, who could just take your money and not recover files. There is nothing stopping them from doing that, as they have no obligation to help you. It should also be mentioned that the ransomware business in very profitable, thus attracts more and more crooks. By paying, you would be supporting ransomware creators and their future creations. We would suggest investing that money into reliable backup instead of complying with the demands. Next time this happens, and you have backup, you won’t have to worry about losing your files because you could just recover them from backup.

If you have backup already, delete LOCKME Ransomware if it’s still present on your computer, and recover files from wherever you are storing them.

How does ransomware spread?

Ransomware can often be encountered in spam emails, malicious ads and dubious downloads. The emails containing the ransomware might appear to be completely legitimate, appear to be from real companies and contain seemingly important information, which is why so many people fall for them and end up with encrypted files. There are a couple of signs that would help you spot an infected email attachment, and you should familiarize yourself with them. An obvious one is grammatical mistakes in the text. No legitimate sender whose attachment you should open would allow there to be mistakes in the text.

Crooks also like to use known company names to make users more trusting. If you get an email from a company whose service you use, you will always be greeted by name. If the email starts with a greeting such as Dear Customer, User or Member, something is wrong. We also suggest being more selective about where you download from. Sources, such as Torrents, could be hosting ransomware, so avoid them.

LOCKME Ransomware removal

If the infection is still in your computer, you will need to obtain anti-malware software to uninstall LOCKME Ransomware. Manual elimination is possible, but we cannot recommend it because you could end up further damaging the computer. Unfortunately, the program would only remove LOCKME Ransomware, it wouldn’t recover your files.
