What is Manifestus?

Manifestus is an updated version of the M4N1F3STO ransomware. It’s a file encrypting virus that demands money for file restoration. Unlike the previous version, Manifestus does actually encrypt your files, it’s not just your screen that is affected. The damage done might be different, but it still uses the same spread methods, the main being spam email attachments.

Manifestus

To get infected, all you have to do is open the wrong file attachment and the ransomware downloads onto your computer. One of the reasons why ransomware is so dangerous is because file decryption is rarely possible. There is the option of paying the ransom, but we must warn you that paying does not always lead to decryption. You might be wasting your time and money. Remove Manifestus and you can then get your files back from your backup.

What does Manifestus do?

Despite there being hundreds of different ransomware, they all use much the same ways to spread. The most popular way is via spam email. The ransomware developers attach an infected file and once it’s opened, the virus downloads onto the computer. In this day of age, it is very difficult to avoid ransomware because it’s hard to determent which emails are legitimate and which are dangerous. Before you open an email attachment, you need to double check the sender and the contents. If, for example, you get an Amazon invoice and yet you do not recall buying anything recently, your best bet it to look into it more before you open the invoice. Even if the sender is pressuring you, saying it’s urgent, you need to stay cautious.

If Manifestus has, indeed, infected your computer, you will see the .fucked file extension added to all affected files. A ransom note will then appear and state that your personal files have been encrypted. It goes on to say that the decryption key is stored on a remote server and if you want it, you need to pay 0.2 Bitcoins ($190). The claims that the developers are making are, unfortunately, true. In order to restore the files, you need to have a decryption key. Sometimes, malware researchers release free decryption keys for some ransomware, so your best bet is to wait for that. While paying seems like the obvious option and granted, it does not ask for that much money compared to other ransomware but there are no guarantees that your files will be decrypted if you pay. Ignore the demands and delete Manifestus. If you had backup prior to infection, your files are safe and you can get them back once you remove Manifestus.

Manifestus removal

In order to delete Manifestus, you will need anti-malware software. Manual Manifestus removal is possible but because of its complexity its not recommended. You also need to invest in reliable backup so that if this were to happen again, the only thing you would need to worry about would be how to erase Manifestus.
