About this threat

Cyclone ransomware is a file-encrypting type of malware that will leave your files locked. If your computer gets infected with this, or any other ransomware, your files will be encrypted and you will be unable to access them. This makes ransomware a very dangerous infection, especially because file recovery is not always possible.

In some cases, malware researchers release free decryptors for certain ransomware but it’s not always possible. In that case, if users do not have backup, recovering files is likely impossible. You might consider paying the ransom in this kind of situation, but that is not recommended. Mainly because you are dealing with cyber crooks, who might not feel obligated to help you even if you pay. You would also be supporting their future activities, and it’s already a billion dollar industry. It would be wiser to invest that money into backup so that if you got your computer infected with ransomware, you could just recover files from backup. It’s likely you picked up the infection by opening a malicious email attachment, or by downloading something from unreliable sources. If you want to avoid losing your files, be more careful.

How did it infect a computer?

Ransomware infections are usually attached to emails, and when users download and open the file attached, they infect their computers. Good email habits are important for this reason, and you should never open email attachments from senders you do not recognize. Especially ones actively prompting you to open the attachment. Before you open attachments, you first need to make sure it’s safe to open them. If you were not expecting the email, investigate the contents and the attachment thoroughly. You should also avoid downloading something from unreliable sources, such as pop-ups or Torrents. Stick to legitimate/secure websites.

What does it do?

The ransomware will start encrypting your files the moment you allow it to enter your computer. It targets all kinds of files, and all affected ones will have the .cyclone file attachment. The AES-256 cipher is used to do the encryption. You will be unable to open any of the encrypted files, and a pop-up will show up on your screen. It will explain what has happened, and you will be offered to recover files if you transfer them Bitcoins. Victims are asked to pay 0.005 Bitcoin to the provided address, which equals to around $90 or €80. They are also give a time period in which they must pay, otherwise, the decryptor would be deleted. While it’s not a lot of money compared to what other ransomware request, paying is still not recommended. There is no guarantee that you would get the files back, and you can get trustworthy backup for that money. There is also a possibility that malware researchers will release a decryptor to help victims unlock files, but that is not always possible. However, you are better off putting your trust in security researchers than cyber criminals who do not care what happens to your files. Do not put up with the demands, and delete Cyclone ransomware. If you have backup, you can recover files after you get rid of the infection.

Cyclone ransomware removal

If the ransomware is still in your system, you will have to use anti-malware software to uninstall Cyclone ransomware. Manual elimination is not suggested, primarily because you might end up damaging your computer further. Instead, use security software to do it. However, anti-malware will merely erase the infection, it will not recover your files.
