About this threat

Secure Search is a browser hijacker that could take over your browser if you incorrectly install free software. It’s not malicious and it will not directly harm your computer but it’s not harmless. It will change browser’s settings and set itself as your homepage and new tabs without permission and proceed to redirect you to sponsored websites.

Secure Search Virus

These redirects happen via provided search engine. While the hijacker is not malicious itself, it could lead you to something malicious if you are not careful since it does not check whether the sites you are redirected to are secure. So you could very well end up with some kind of malware and that would be a much more serious issue. You should make sure to delete Secure Search. Making sure you avoid these installations in the future is also important, so keep that in mind as you proceed with this report.

How do hijackers spread?

Browser hijackers spread using free software bundles. They are attached to free software as extra offers and in order to prevent their installation, you need to manually deselect them. This can be done in Advanced or Custom settings, when setting up the freeware. Those settings will allow you to check if something is attached and will also give you the option of deselecting everything. Make sure you uncheck every single box that appears there because it’s much easier to uncheck a few boxes than it would be to remove Secure Search.

Why uninstall Secure Search?

The good thing about hijackers is that it’s very easy to notice them. Your browser’s settings will be changed and you will have a new homepage. These changes are made without permission and once they are done, you cannot undo them unless you first delete Secure Search. Until then, the weird site will load every time you open your browser, be it Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. The website you will be led to will have a search engine that will lead to Bing. It’s a completely legitimate search engine but the problem is the hijacker is basically forcing you to use it, which is why you should not put up with it. Every search your perform, be it via the provided search box or your browser’s address bar, you will be redirected to Bing. And in any case, you could just go to Bing directly, no need to use some questionable third-party website. Just remove Secure Search and you can go back to usual browsing.

Secure Search removal

There are two ways to uninstall Secure Search, manually and automatically. We would recommend the latter method because this may be the quickest option as the program would take care of everything. Manual Secure Search removal is possible but that means you will have to find all hijacker related files yourself, and that will take longer than you think.
