About MacAppExtensions

MacAppExtensions is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) aimed at Mac computers. It’s a program that installs without explicit permission, and one that changes browser’s settings and exposes you to never-ending advertisements. It’s not exactly a malicious program, even if it seemingly behaves like one, but it’s in no way useful either. Developers behind it have created it with the intention of making revenue from ads you are shown while it’s installed on your computer. MacAppExtensions

Your homepage and default search engine will be changed by the program, and you’ll be encouraged to use a search engine that generates sponsored results. You will also start seeing annoying pop-up advertisements promoting questionable program, scams and potentially malicious “updates”. While it may be advertised as some kind of useful program, it’s in no way useful to you. The quicker you remove MacAppExtensions, the faster you can go back to normal computer use. In the meantime, you need to not interact with any adverts because you could end up exposing your computer to malware otherwise.

If you’re wondering how the program managed to install onto your computer without you noticing, it’s pretty simple. It used the bundling method, a way that allows PUPs to be added to legitimate freeware as extra offers which can install alongside without needing permission. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to prevent these unwanted installations, as you simply need to manually deselect them. However, the problem is that a lot of users are not even aware that something could be added to the programs they are installing. If this sounds new to you, we suggest you read the following paragraph carefully and learn how you can install freeware correctly.

How did MacAppExtensions install?

Since no one would install such programs willingly, they use the bundling method to spread. They are added to popular free programs as extra offers, and are authorized to install alongside without users needing to permit it. This is a rather sneaky method, and program that use it are generally always referred to as PUPs. If you wish to prevent these unwanted installations, you need to pay attention to how you install freeware. The most important thing is to choose Advanced (Custom) settings when given the option. Those settings will show you whether something has been added to the program you are installing, and if there is something, you will be able to deselect it. All you need to do is uncheck the boxes, after which you can continue installing the program.

The programs users pick up via the method are generally not malicious. They are, however, highly annoying to deal with. It takes only a couple of seconds to uncheck the boxes, and compared to the time you will spend trying to get rid of the programs once they are installed, you’re much better off preventing unwanted installations from the very beginning.

Should you uninstall MacAppExtensions?

Soon after the program is installed, it will change your browsers settings (Google Chrome, Safari, and Mozilla Firefox) and set search.tapufind.com as your search engine, and tab.tapufind.com as your new tab. Your explicit permission is not necessary to perform these changes, and you will be unable to undo them while the PUP is installed. The search engine you will be offered to use is highly questionable as it aims to redirect you to sponsored websites in order to make revenue. Search results will be full of ads and unrelated content, so it’s not very useful as a search engine. Some of the results might expose you to unreliable content, so we would recommend to not interact with any suspicious results.

In addition to the changes made to your browser, you will also notice an increase in ads. Not just regular ones, but the annoying pop-ups and redirects as well. Since the program is aiming to make revenue, it will expose you to a lot of ads. Ones that are generated by untrustworthy programs like MacAppExtensions are safe and should not be clicked on. You will constantly get ads that warn you about a supposed system issue on your computer, which can be solved if you download the offered program. Those warnings are fake, and the offered programs usually end up being some kind of malware.

You will also be offered to download updates. One particular ad will inform you that your browser has been updated, and if you press “OK”, a malicious program would download. This is why interacting with such ads is not a good idea, even if it’s a seemingly harmless action like pressing OK.

You should also beware of scams that offer you prizes. Those kinds of ads are common when dealing with adware, but fortunately, most users know that all free giveaways are scams.

The program will also collect certain kind of information about you, such as sites visited, search queries, IP address, etc. This information can also be shared with unknown third-parties.
