What is Phobos ransomware?

Phobos ransomware is a file-encrypting parasite that can encode various types of files. It spreads online through spam emails, fake ads, corrupted links, and so on. The malware mainly targets computer users living in Russia, Germany, and Ukraine. Its main goal is to make users pay the so-called ransom for the encrypted files. The hackers are supposedly the only ones that can recover your data. There is no reason to trust them, however, because you may be left with nothing, even if you pay them. We advise that you get rid of Phobos ransomware without hesitation.

How does Phobos ransomware work?

As it has already been mentioned, Phobos ransomware gets distributed by employing various deceitful tactics. You should know that the parasite does not enter your PC alone. It usually installs other malign software onto your computer. It has been linked to Murex, Zemot, CMSBrute, and Kovter. These harmful applications can cause unwanted redirects, steal your personal information, drop other malware onto your system, and more. There is no question that when you delete Phobos ransomware, you should terminate these programs as well.

Like most other ransomware, Phobos uses the AES-256 encryption algorithm to corrupt your files. It encrypts various file formats including your documents, databases, photos, videos, and more. The affected files will be easy to recognize as all of them will have such extensions as .7h9r, .ytbl, .xtbl, .da_vinci_code, or similar. After the encryption is complete, the program will present you with a ransom note. It will ask you to contact the hackers via email and threaten that attempts of decryption will lead to you losing your data for good. These are clearly just scare tactics used to convince you to pay the ransom. We do not recommend doing so. You should delete Phobos ransomware from your PC right away and try other ways of recovering your files.
